North Korea Threatens to Execute Smugglers to Keep the Chinese Coronavirus at Bay

North Korean police have issued a decree warning of harsh penalties for smugglers, potentially including execution, in a bid to keep the Chinese coronavirus at bay.
The order was criticized by North Koreans who noted that smuggling and the black market are vital to survival under the Communist regime in Pyongyang.
North Korea has presented one of the nightmare scenarios for epidemiologists ever since the Wuhan virus began spreading in December, given its malnourished population, poor health care, and paranoid rulers.
North Korean state media insists there are zero cases of coronavirus infection in their country. South Korean media claims there are coronavirus infections and fatalities in North Korea, but the regime is concealing them.
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said there are “no indications” of an outbreak in North Korea, but it remains concerned about the danger and will continue supplying diagnostic equipment, protective gear, and other supplies. WHO described the North Korean government as “very anxious to make preparations” and eager to receive “technical and operational assistance to help them get ready.”
WHO credited North Korea’s rigorous testing and isolation procedures for travelers with keeping the coronavirus out of the country. As Reuters put it, North Korea was “already one of the world’s most closed-off countries” before it “topped flights and train services with its neighbors, established month-long mandatory quarantines, suspended international tourism and imposed a near-complete lockdown on cross-border travel.”
North Korean police took that lockdown to the next level this month by warning smugglers who violate the border quarantine that they will be severely punished and possibly even executed by firing squad for treason. The edict was spread across the country in a series of community meetings.
“Sources in the country say that residents think that the decree is absurd because smuggling is important to the livelihoods of many living in areas near the Sino-Korean border,” Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on Tuesday.
South Korean media reported last week that a North Korean trade official was executed for violating quarantine laws to use a public bath, so there is good reason to believe the threats of execution for smugglers are serious.
In addition to complaining about the damage to their livelihoods inflicted by shutting down the black market, North Koreans living near the Chinese border told RFA they see the threats of treason charges and execution as a sign the coronavirus is already spreading in North Korea, but the government is not willing to admit it. These nervous skeptics noted the police decree is much harsher than any measures taken during the SARS epidemic of 2003 or deadly outbreaks of diseases such as cholera. To this day, the North Korean regime officially claims it never experienced a single case of SARS, although inside sources say the disease did spread there and inflicted a number of fatalities.
As for South Korea, it reported 20 new cases of coronavirus infection on Tuesday, bringing its total to 51. At least 15 of the new infections are believed to be people who attended church services with a woman known to be infected, although how she contracted the virus has not yet been determined. The church in question has been temporarily shut down and its attendees encouraged to seek coronavirus screening immediately.

How do we know it’s not infecting children? I haven’t seen any stats out of China regarding demographics of infected people or deaths. We can’t assume anything at this point.

According to the numbers coming out of China (fwiw) along with other countries the median age of infected is 57 or so with very few teens or children. Chris Martenson, Dr. John’s videos from England and Denninger have all picked up on this. They also used early (non peer reviewed) papers from The Lancet and JAMA IIRC. There are ’some’ infections among the young but the lions share is middle age and older so far.

Saved, to glorify God.
And produce. What about produce? I was getting some the other day and realized I and everybody else pick it up and test it for ripeness. What to do?
Back in the early ‘70’s when we were stationed in ITALY the health Regulations THERE (and in other parts of Europe) FORBID the public from touching the fresh produce. The seller had one person who was assigned to bag whatever you wanted to buy. You could not pick and choose which apple, peach, or tomato you wanted. Wise rule I thought. The public accepted it as more sanitary than allowing just anyone from the street to handle your food before you bought it.

I've stopped buying fresh produce, unless it's already wrapped or bagged. I'm not taking any chances that someone before me has picked it up, coughed, or sneezed on it. I can wipe the bags down, before opening, but you can't sterilize fresh fruits and veggies that someone else may have contaminated, that I know of.

This too shall pass.
That’s quite a jump, considering how few people have died elsewhere outside of China. I’m assuming their medical system is probably no better than China’s?

If you buy stuff that can be peeled (bananas, oranges) or cooked (cabbage, kale, potatoes) you are probably safe, so long as you are careful about how you handle it. I’m mostly buying canned or frozen veggies, but we do still want fresh fruit. Some things, like apples, can be disinfected - wash well and rinse.

Of course, though, still clean it assuming the worst, bagged or not.

I agree, but instead of buying individual items, I buy by the bags, instead. I shop at Sam's, and all of their fresh produce and fruits are already bagged or sealed inside plastic containers. I just feel safer doing it that way. Even buying it by the bags and containers, I always rinse, before eating. I was buying everything a Walmart, where people would go along, picking up everything to check it out. Even have seen women coughing or sneezing on items, before placing them back on the shelves or bins! Made me want to gag, so I stopped buying fresh produce there.

Walmart, or Kroger, are pretty much our only options unless we drive an hour each way, and that just isn’t very feasible for us, unfortunately. Too bad most frozen fruit is so expensive.

Oh, I understand. Sam's is only about 30 miles from us, so we get to shop there every time we go into town which is twice a month.

Florida not only has Disney, other attractions, and lots of beaches; but a huge percentage of U.S. cruise ship passengers go through Florida. Cruise lines are probably begging Florida officials to keep numbers secret.
And have an outbreak on board so you become a cruise ship pariah where nobody wants you? Cruise ship operators may be crazy but not that crazy. I suggest that the operators are demanding that Florida let then know when the Chinese Plague is loose on the FL streets.

The Hajj is coming. Just like any other devotees, the muzzies will be confident of divine protection, so they'll go pandemic or not. A couple months after the Hajj will be interesting.
yea, but the Hijab is equivalent to the N95 so they will all be protected - hahaha

I would consider any fresh produce contaminated.

What is the best way to mitigate this?
I know that they recommend you soak your produce in apple cider vinegar to rid it of pesticides and other contaminants that may have gotten on it when the pickers were handling it. I would guess that, that is your best bet for cleaning your produce without poisoning yourself or affecting the taste of the food. I once read that vinegar kills ebola supposedly, so it would make sense that ACV could do something similar.

The ACV wouldn't soak into the produce giving it an "off" taste?

I get what you're saying, and I'm not disputing that. But let's remember that A) We can't trust China's numbers. B) Much of the statistics we DO know come from the cruise ships, and not many young children or toddlers go on cruises. And C) I've worked in the medical journal space, and they will crunch numbers whatever way works best for an agenda--not necessarily truth.

I do agree that it's very probably only the flu affecting young kids. But if this COVID-19 virus is particularly harsh with those who have compromised immune systems, then that would put so many of our American children at high risk if they're just recently recuperating from a virulent flu.

I believe they changed those parameters recently (within past few days), but I'm not sure what would make them think "coronavirus" and not "flu"... maybe if a person seems very I'll and the flu tests are negative?
(Shoot! Sorry... I hit reply, but it didn't copy the post I was responding to! This was in response to the CDC only testing for COVID19 if you had been in China recently)

A couple weeks ago, my whole family got really sick--very unusual for us. My two year old was tested and we were told she had Influenza A, but I tested negative for flu, and they never told me what I had. I got a really high fever and a terrible chest cough that refused to go away. There was an irritating wet sound in my lungs when I would breathe in while lying down. Still don't know what I had, but it really took it out of me, and we were worried about the fever because I am pregnant. The doctor told me that, despite testing negative for flu, they were going to write me a perscription for tamiflu. I'm guessing they didn't know what I had, and just wanted to look like they were doing something. The illness originated from my husband's firefighter training class; everyone got it, and several even ended up in the hospital.

I think we are on two week infection cycles now, from the 14th to the 28th, and then we will start one week cycles for March, and for April well it will be chaos by tax time and Xi's lies will be no longer hidden. Trump, well Trump is going to impale himself on that type of "mission accomplished" drivel speak. Yep, that straight up graph says it all
APRIL 15TH IS NOW THE NEW DOOMER DOUG GO TO DATE. February 29th, followed by March in one week sequences, with April 15th, and then May 1, commie barbarian day.

Have we given up on tracking the number of officially infected cases here in the US? Somewhere along this thread, I lost track if a number has been posted.

The fact that they haven't yet shut down tells you how crazy they are. The cruise lines and their insurers are playing the odds, hoping that this will get contained, and in denial about the depth of the problem.
Be interesting to see what protocols they have devised should the Chinese Plague suddenly appear on their vessel. The word out for that one in Japan harbor is that the crew had no clue what to do or not do and that spread the contagion as well as any other source.
