The accidental missile strike that rocked the Iranian strategic Chabahar Port stemmed from what is now understood to be a mishap during military drills.

According to reports, missiles launched from the Oman Sea by the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) accidentally targeted the Chabahar petrochemical complex.

The missiles veered off course and targeted the plant.

Prior to this incident, conflicting reports emerged, initially suggesting that Iranian air defenses successfully intercepted unidentified missiles over the city. However, local authorities later refuted these claims, raising questions about the accuracy of early reports and adding to the confusion surrounding the situation.

The Chabahar is a significant port for Iranian trade and commerce, situated along the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil transport.

Iran Can Build Nuclear Bomb in One Week, Signaling ‘Extreme Danger’ for Western World, Report Says

Adam Kredo
February 5, 2024

Iran has enough weapons-grade uranium to produce its first nuclear weapon within a week and a total of six bombs within a month, a scenario that is increasingly likely to unfold as conflict in the Middle East reaches critical levels, according to a report from a watchdog group.

"The volatile situation in the region is providing Iran with a unique opportunity and increased internal justification for building nuclear weapons while the United States and Israel’s resources to detect and deter Iran from succeeding are stretched thin," the Institute for Science and International Security, a watchdog group that monitors Tehran’s atomic program, warned in a report published Monday. "Iran's nuclear weapons capabilities are more dangerous than they have ever been, while its relations with the West are at a low point."

The findings signal "extreme danger" for the international community and marks the "first time" the institute has issued such a determination since it began reporting on the Iranian nuclear program’s threat level in October 2022. In May 2023, when the last report was published, Iran’s total threat score was calculated at 140 out of 180. This year the score reached 151.

Hamas’s war against Israel, which is being supported by Iran, has significantly increased the likelihood that Tehran races to build a functional nuclear weapon, according to the report. The United States is now in its third day of airstrikes against Iranian targets across the Middle East, threatening to ignite a broader conflict with Iran that could consume the region and increase Tehran’s rush to become a nuclear-armed power.

The Islamic Republic continues to make "progress on developing sensitive nuclear capabilities, ... increasing its nuclear weaponization efforts beyond breakout."

Iran has the ability to "break out and produce enough weapon-grade enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon in a week, using only a fraction of its 60 percent enriched uranium," according to the report. "This breakout could be difficult for inspectors to detect promptly, if Iran took steps to delay inspectors’ access."

Using its stock of 60 percent enriched uranium, which has grown under the Biden administration, and a remaining allotment of around 20 percent enriched uranium, Iran "could have in total enough weapon-grade uranium for six weapons in one month, and after five months of producing weapon-grade uranium, it could have enough for twelve."

The problem is compounded by Iran’s refusal to give international nuclear inspectors full access to its contested enrichment sites. The level of obfuscation has increased during the past year.

Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s director general, warned in January that Tehran is refusing oversight in an "unprecedented way."

"It's a very frustrating situation. We continue our activities there, but at a minimum," Grossi said during the World Economic Forum in Davos. "They are restricting cooperation in a very unprecedented way."

This "lack of transparency" led the institute to increase the threat level regarding Iran’s program by two points compared with May 2023.

Tehran has also greatly increased its ability to enrich uranium from very low levels to those needed as fuel for a nuclear bomb, according to the report.

"Iran has a capability to produce large amounts of enriched uranium and achieve enrichment levels up to 90 percent, or weapon-grade uranium," the institute concluded, noting that "Iran has ambitious goals to increase its enrichment program, aiming for tens of thousands of advanced centrifuges, producing a range of enrichment levels, and tens of thousands of kilograms of enriched uranium."

With this increasingly large stockpile, "Iran could rapidly produce enough weapon-grade uranium for a small nuclear arsenal," the report concluded. "In addition, Iran has multiple ways to deliver nuclear weapons, including on ballistic missiles."

Meanwhile, Iran announced on Monday that it is beginning construction on a fourth home-built nuclear reactor, signaling the regime’s desire to continue building out its atomic infrastructure.

Iran building new nuclear reactor in Isfahan

6 hours ago6 hours ago

The head of Iran's atomic energy agency has announced the construction of a powerful reactor at the Isfahan nuclear research center. It's the latest of several similar plans that Tehran has made public in recent days.

Iran said on Monday that it was building a fourth nuclear research reactor in the central city of Isfahan, days after announcing the construction a new nuclear power plant complex in the south of the country.

"Today, the process of pouring concrete for the foundation of the reactor started at the Isfahan site," Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

IRNA described the new 10-megawatt reactor as a "research reactor," and said it would have a variety of applications including fuel and nuclear material tests and the production of industrial radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. The Isfahan nuclear research center is already home to three reactors.

The country's nuclear program has been criticized internationally, with experts outside of the country concerned that the program ultimately seeks to build nuclear weapons.

Iran, meanwhile, says it has no such intentions and that its nuclear program is for civilian use only.

Iran faces a series of US sanctions dating back to Donald Trump's 2018 withdrawal from an international deal brokered in 2015 that aimed to stop Iran's purported nuclear ambitions.

Iran seeks capacity to rival major nuclear power players

In January, the director general of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said Iran was "restricting" cooperation with the agency and called the Iran nuclear situation "frustrating."

Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said last Thursday that a new nuclear power plant complex was being built in Sirik, and that it would have a combined daily production capacity of 5,000 megawatts.

"We must reach the production capacity of 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the country by the year 2041," Eslami said during a visit to the region with President Ebrahim Raisi.

The United States, France, China, Russia and South Korea are the only five countries in the world that currently have more than 20,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity installed.

Iran currently has one operational nuclear power plant, in Bushehr, creating about 3,000 megawatts.

According to IRNA, the Sirik plants should be operational by 2031.

Iran issues warning to US about possible attacks on 2 cargo ships suspected of spy activities

Greg Wehner
Sun, February 4, 2024 at 4:41 PM PST·4 min read

Iranian officials warned the U.S. on Sunday about possibly targeting two cargo ships in the Middle East that are suspected of being spy ships for the country.

The warning was issued after forces from the U.S. and U.K. launched an airstrike offensive against Houthi rebels located in Yemen.

The Associated Press reported that the statement from Iran referred to the Behshad and Saviz ships, which are both registered commercial cargo ships with a company based in Tehran, which the U.S. Treasury sanctioned as a front for the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

The statement also appeared to show Tehran’s increasing uneasiness with the U.S. strike in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, which targeted militias backed by the Islamic Republic.

IRAN VOWS TO ‘DECISIVELY RESPOND’ TO ANY US ATTACKS: 'NO THREAT WILL BE LEFT UNANSWERED

The attacks ordered by President Biden were in response to the killing of three U.S. soldiers and the wounding of dozens of others in Jordan. Attacks on U.S. troops and facilities in the Middle East have also increased since the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip intensified after Hamas’ invasion of Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

The U.S. continues to claim it is not looking for a war in the Middle East and is there to ensure the war between Hamas and Israel does not spread across the region.

U.S. and coalition forces launched more than two dozen strikes on Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen on Saturday, targeting 13 locations with deeply buried storage facilities, missile systems, launchers, air defense systems and radars, according to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

US, COALITION FORCES, LAUNCH MULTIPLE STRIKES AGAINST IRAN-BACKED HOUTHIS IN YEMEN

After the attacks, the Houthis did not provide an assessment of the damage, though they issued a statement.

"These attacks will not discourage Yemeni forces and the nation from maintaining their support for Palestinians in the face of Zionist occupation and crimes," Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said. "The aggressors’ airstrikes will not go unanswered."

The Behshad and Saviz are suspected of being spy ships for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, as both ships have loitered in the Red Sea off Yemen for years.

US RETALIATORY STRIKES WILL PROVE ‘INEFFECTIVE’: KIRK LIPPOLD

Saudi Arabia described the Saviz in 2017 as a maritime base and weapons transfer point for the Revolutionary Guard. The ship was staffed by men in military fatigues, and Saudi-owned television stations showed the ship with what looked to be a machine bolted to the deck of the ship and covered.

Iran’s regular army issued a statement in a video on Sunday, which, according to The Associated Press, has a narrator describing the two vessels as "floating armories."

The narrator also reportedly describes the Behshad as an aid for countering piracy in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden," though Iran is not known to have been part of any campaigns recently against Somali piracy in the region, at least publicly.

US STRIKES HOUTHI ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE INSIDE YEMEN, OFFICIAL SAYS

Before the U.S. launched its attacks, the Behshad moved south into the Gulf of Aden, and it is now docked in Djibouti in East Africa, near a Chinese Military base.

The video statement ends with images of U.S. warships, an American flag and a warning.

"Those engaging in terrorist activities against Behshad, or similar vessels jeopardize international maritime routes, security and assume global responsibility for potential future international risks," the video stated.

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital on the matter.

The Saviz is reportedly in the Indian Ocean near the location where the U.S. claims Iranian drone attacks have targeted ships.

The same ship, in 2021, had a hole blown through its hull by a possible mine explosion in an attack suspected to have been carried out by Israel. The ship ultimately returned to its port.

Fox News Digital’s Louis Casiano and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Iran Says Constructing Largest Space Launch Base In Middle East

February 5, 2024 0 Comments
By Tasnim News Agency

Iran’s minister of communications and information technology (ICT) said the country is building the largest space launch base in the West Asian region.

Issa Zarepour made the remarks on Sunday, adding that the country will launch another satellite by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (to end March 20, 2024).

Important events have taken place in the space industry of the country, the ICT minister said, putting the number of satellite launches in the country since the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi took office in August 2021 at 11.

He expressed hope that the country will soon increase the number of space launches.

Zarepour pointed to the construction operation of the largest space launch base in the country and in West Asia and noted that the first phase of the base will be completed by the end of the next Iranian calendar year (to start March 21, 2024).

Iran once put its satellites into orbit in cooperation with other countries but now, it has attained the most advanced technology in the space industry and can independently send its homegrown satellites into orbit successfully, the ICT minister emphasized.

He further said using the high capacities of the private sector companies and knowledge-based companies has been put on the top agenda of the ministry.

OPINION>NATIONAL SECURITY
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY CONTRIBUTORS ARE THEIR OWN AND NOT THE VIEW OF THE HILL

The question we are forgetting to ask: How will we handle this once Iran is nuclear?

BY ERIC MANDEL, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - 02/09/24 10:30 AM ET

Americans are debating whether President Biden’s retaliatory strikes against Iranian proxies for killing three U.S. service personnel will deter Iran. But they are asking the wrong question.

The current dispute centers on the best tactical approach to deter the theocratic regime and its Revolutionary Guards. The Biden camp believes that a significant strike in Iran is not worth the risk of entangling America in a full-scale war. The alternative and counterintuitive choice for the administration would be to attack the Islamic Republic directly and reinstate the full force of sanctions to deter the source of most of the mischief currently underway in the Middle East.

As a Wall Street Journal editorial put it, “The real test will be whether these strikes and covert U.S. actions, such as cyber-attacks, will deter Iran. The rulers in Tehran are the terror masters behind these militias, and so far, they have paid no price for helping to kill Americans.”

But this argument, while very important in the short term, is merely a tactical decision. It ignores the longer-term American strategic policy toward Iran and America’s ability to influence the Middle East.

To make the point, imagine how this situation would be different if Iran had already successfully tested a nuclear device. At that point, there would be a couple of strategic questions: How we would respond, knowing Iran possesses nuclear weapons; how a nuclear Iran limits our options and undermines our interests and allies; and how our allies around the world would perceive us if we allowed Iran to go on and become a nuclear power?

Those questions aren’t in the news now, with everyone so distracted by Israel’s wars with Hamas and Hezbollah, even as Iran accelerates its nuclear program. As Ben Caspit wrote in Al-Monitor nearly a year ago, Gen. Mark Milley told Congress that Iran could make enough fissile material for four or five nuclear bombs in “less than two weeks.” But the part of his testimony that truly stunned Israel’s defense establishment was Milley’s claim that once Iran produces sufficient military-grade uranium, it could put together a nuclear weapon within “several more months.”

International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi said in December that inspectors “confirmed…an increased production of highly enriched uranium at both of Iran’s main nuclear facilities.”

Before Oct. 7, America’s primary concern in the Middle East was the Iranian nuclear program. Today, we focus on finding the right tactical strategy to deter Iran’s proxies without dragging the U.S. into another regional war. What we are failing to see is that taking our eyes off the rapidly developing Iranian nuclear program is just what Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has planned. Just knowing Iran can have a bomb at any time of its choosing changes America’s options.

Revolutionary Iran’s goals are and always have been to chase America out of the Middle East, annihilate Israel, and dominate its Sunni neighbors. Nuclear weapons are a game changer in that respect, and they will be here much sooner than you think. American politicians rarely plan for the future, preferring to kick the can down the road to avoid dealing with consequential decisions that could draw us into another politically damaging “endless war.”

But what if the proverbial can has reached the end of the road? What if Iran has passed the threshold where diplomacy can address the situation? Obama’s and Biden’s desire for a temporary pause in their nuclear development and Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal without a Plan B have not served America’s interests. As Al Jazeera has reported, “a confidential IAEA report released last month indicated that Iran’s estimated stockpile of enriched uranium had reached more than 22 times the limit set out in a 2015 accord between Tehran and world powers.”

We know Iran can produce enough enriched uranium for multiple nuclear weapons in a few weeks and the ability to deliver a nuclear warhead to anywhere in the region with its vast ballistic missile arsenal. The only thing they are believed to be lacking is the final step for weaponization, converting the enriched uranium gas into a metal that can be compartmentalized into spherical metal objects placed on the warhead. And that can be done in a minimal workspace.

So now the question is, can America live with a nuclear Iran without being dominated by Iran’s proxy network?

Iran is not a rational state actor in the Western sense, but its behavior is logical if you put yourself in the mindset of the hegemonic Shiite Islamist power. American foreign policy experts forget that Iran’s Achilles heel is its need to survive indefinitely at all costs. The lack of sanctions enforcement, with America too timid to attack Iranian nuclear, military, or economic assets, makes the U.S. seem like a paper tiger to the Supreme Leader, who is more than willing to fight to the last drop of blood of his Arab proxies in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.

The Iranian populace is 45 percent non-Persian, and many of the 55 percent Persian majority would love to be free from the authoritarian regime. Yet we have taken regime change through the Iranian people off the table, even though it is our best strategic as well as moral foreign policy card.

So, while we debate whether strikes against Iranian proxies are enough dissuade the mullahs from supporting their proxy network, we should pause and re-frame the question. In a short time, how will we deal with an Iran that is on the cusp of a nuclear arsenal that rivaling that of North Korea?

Diplomacy only works with a credible military threat. If you believe in diplomacy as the path to constrain Iran’s nuclear program, then a limited military campaign targeting Iranian assets in Iran may now be the only choice.

Prominent Iranian Religious Singer Assassinated In Esfahan Province

Rasoul Shahriari, a prominent 'maddah' or religious eulogist in Iran close to the Islamic government, was gunned down in Esfahan province by unidentified assailants.

Government media reported that the motive for the murder is unknown and is currently being investigated by intelligence agencies.

The event echoes a similar incident from the previous year when another Iranian religious singer, Habil Afaq-Azar, met a similar fate in Tabriz, East Azarbaijan province.

Afaq-Azar's lifeless body, bearing gunshot wounds, was discovered in a city neighborhood, hinting at a premeditated act. Like Afaq-Azar, Shahriari’s ties to the regime and his role in promoting its propaganda domestically and abroad raise questions about the motives behind his assassination.

Meanwhile, in recent years maddahs, once known for their poignant lamentations in cemeteries and during the mourning month of Muharram, transitioning into influential political figures in Iran's clerical regime.

Under the guise of religion, some maddahs have been involved in subversive activities, prompting neighboring countries like Azerbaijan to take action against Iranian espionage networks.

During election seasons, eulogists' associations emerge as key players in propaganda campaigns, with fees escalating based on their perceived closeness to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Figures like Mahmoud Karimi, one of Tehran's wealthiest and most renowned eulogists, exemplify this trend, with their endorsements carrying substantial weight in political circles.

Iran Fires First Ship-based Long-range Ballistic Missiles
AFP

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday it has launched long-range ballistic missiles from a warship for the first time.

The launch from the Shahid Mahdavi during naval manoeuvres involved firing two ballistic missiles capable of striking targets up to 1,700 kilometres (1,050 miles) away.

“The IRGC for the first time has fired ballistic missiles in the Gulf of Oman,” state television reported.

“The firing of a long-range ballistic missile from the warship was successfully carried out,” IRGC chief Hossein Salami said.

Tehran has made support for the Palestinian cause a centrepiece of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Western governments have repeatedly voiced concerns over Iran’s missile programme.

Cyberattack hits Iran parliament websites: state media

The websites of Iran’s parliament and its affiliated news agency went down Tuesday after they were targeted by hackers, state media reported

“The websites of the parliament and Khane Mellat (ICANA.ir) news agency have been hacked and become unavailable since this morning due to cyberattacks,” the official IRNA news agency reported.

“The scale of the problem is under investigation by expert technical teams,” IRNA added, quoting a statement from the legislature.

The cyberattack was claimed by a hacking group called “Uprising till Overthrow”, affiliated with exiled opposition group the People’s Mujahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), which Iran considers a terrorist organisation.

In a statement on its Telegram channel, the group said it hacked 600 servers affiliated with Iran’s parliament and released hundreds of pages of hacked material on its Telegram page.

The cyberattack took place less than three weeks before Iran goes to the polls to elect a new parliament on March 1.

Websites linked to Iran’s government and affiliated media outlets have suffered several cyberattacks over the years.

A December cyberattack disrupted fuel sales at 60 percent of Iran’s petrol stations for weeks before services were fully resumed.

In November 2022, hackers disrupted the output of Fars news agency, which was one of the main sources of news disseminated by the state during nationwide protests triggered by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini.

Months later, in February 2023, hackers supporting the protests said they hacked an online broadcast by state television of a speech by President Ebrahim Raisi commemorating the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
